The Shakespeare Chateau — One of America's Most Extraordinary Historic Estates Is Now Available

May 29, 2026

There are properties that are simply difficult to describe without sounding like you are exaggerating. The Shakespeare Chateau at 809 Hall Street in St. Joseph, Missouri is one of them.

Completed in 1885 by architect Edmond Jacques Eckel for Colonel Nathan Phipps Ogden, this Chateauesque landmark occupies a commanding position along historic Hall Street, once known as Millionaires' Row. It stands today as one of the most intact Gilded Age private residences in the United States — and it is now available for the first time in over a decade.

As of May 2026, the property was featured in Dwell Magazine as one of the most architecturally significant historic estates currently on the market in America. I am honored to represent it exclusively through Sage Sotheby's International Realty.

What Makes the Shakespeare Chateau Singular

Most historic homes have been compromised. Original windows replaced. Period details painted over or removed entirely. The Shakespeare Chateau is the exception that makes you realize how rare genuine architectural integrity actually is.

47 original stained-glass windows. Every single one installed in 1885 and still present. An expert who has restored glass for the Metropolitan Museum of Art assessed the estate's pictorial Night and Day panels at the grand staircase as some of the finest hand-painted glass ever produced in America.

The Zuber panoramic wallpaper. Installed circa 1920, the Chateau's "Eldorado" series was hand-blocked in France using 1,554 individual wood blocks and 210 colors. It is one of a limited number of installations of this series in the United States. A counterpart hangs in the White House diplomatic reception room. After more than a century, it remains remarkably intact and immersive.

Hand-carved woodwork throughout. Cherry, mahogany, oak, and walnut — carved by hand and present in every major room. At the base of the main staircase, a pair of carved dragons stand guard. Above the foyer fireplace, a bust of William Shakespeare watches over the entrance hall.

Encaustic tile flooring, ornate plaster ceilings, original period chandeliers, and eight fireplaces complete an interior that has no contemporary equivalent.

The Estate

The Shakespeare Chateau is not a single building. It is a true multi-building campus spanning just under two acres:

The grand main residence at 809 Hall Street. Three stories, 9,000 square feet above grade, eight bedrooms, and six full baths. Every room on the first and second floors contains original stained glass.

A carriage house with three income-producing apartments. A fully functional addition to the estate that provides immediate revenue potential for any owner.

The companion structure at 819 Hall Street. A pre-Civil War brick building with compelling redevelopment potential — residential expansion, guest quarters, or future destination use subject to zoning.

The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and holds individual local landmark designation. National Register designation may create eligibility for Federal and Missouri State Historic Tax Credits.

Two Paths to Ownership

The Shakespeare Chateau is offered across two distinct options depending on the buyer's vision.

The Residential Offering conveys real estate only — for a buyer seeking one of the most extraordinary private residences available in America today.

The Commercial Offering includes most furnishings, operational FF&E, business assets, website, and brand — allowing a qualified buyer to assume the estate's 14-year hospitality operation with minimal friction. The property has operated as a destination inn, wedding and event venue, and cultural tour home with 5-star reviews across major platforms.

*Both offerings include 809 and 819 Hall Street and the full carriage house campus.

As Featured in Dwell Magazine

In May 2026, Dwell Magazine featured the Shakespeare Chateau as one of the most architecturally significant historic properties currently on the market in the United States. The feature highlighted the estate's Gilded Age craftsmanship, the Zuber wallpaper, the original stained glass, and the depth of preservation that sets this property apart from any other historic home currently available.

Experience It for Yourself

The Shakespeare Chateau deserves to be experienced in person. No photography fully captures the scale of the stained glass, the atmosphere of the Zuber wallpaper room, or the presence of the hand-carved woodwork in the entry hall.
